About the Romanian Leu

In Romanian, 'leu' means lion and the name originates from the Dutch Thaler which depicts a lion. A leu is divided into 100 bani which conveniently means 'money'.

Romania introduced the first leu in 1870 and adopted the gold standard in 1889 after joining the Latin Monetary Union. It would later leave the gold standard in 1914, losing much of its value. In 1929 it was pegged to the US dollar and then pegged to the German Reichsmark during World War II.

After the war, the leu's value fell, leading to a new leu in 1947 issued by the National bank of Romania ↱. It was subsequently replaced by the third version of the leu in 1952. During the Ceaușescu Communist regime, it remained fixed, which contributed to economic hardship in the 1980s. Hyperinflation pummelled the currency, which was a contributing factor to the communist government's fall in 1989. The devaluation was so severe that the leu would temporarily claim the least valued world currency. 2005 saw the introduction of the fourth leu, which remains in existence today. The country joined the EU in 2007 and are committed to adopting the euro in 2024.
